Southern Cross Football Centre - Lismore, New South Wales
The Asia Pacific Football Institute has been renamed the Southern Cross Football Centre, as part of the next stage of the centre's development.
The Centre is a community initiative of Southern Cross University, promoting education and participation through sport.
General manager Mr Scott Collis, who was appointed to the Centre late last year, said the new name better reflected the Centre's goals to provide a high quality football sporting facility and promote engagement between the community and the University.
The Southern Cross Football Centre features a world class full size synthetic field which is unique in regional areas.
"We have a number of other works under way, which will help develop this centre into a real drawcard for sporting events in the region," Mr Collis said.
Over recent months the Lismore football community has enjoyed a number of first time events at the Southern Cross Football Centre including recent high profile visits by the Brisbane Roar 'Roar Active' Clinic and Socceroo legend Harry Kewell.
"These events and usage by local clubs and schools have created excitement and increased interest, but feedback from the local community indicated that many did not identify with the Asia Pacific Football Institute name.
"Our vision is for a hub that promotes education, participation and supports delivery of the many benefits of the game to the local community."
Southern Cross University Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Lee said the Centre was an outstanding facility which, over time, would bring many benefits to the community.
"We are really excited about the potential for this Centre and we are pleased that the new name better reflects our support of this community facility."
